Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car manufacturer, has officially started production of its first-ever electric vehicle — the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara EV. The landmark moment took place at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the production.

The Maruti e Vitara EV will not only be available in India but will also be exported to over 100 countries, making it a global product straight from Indian soil.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi called it a proud milestone, saying: “Today is a special day in India’s quest for self-reliance and being a hub for green mobility. The e-Vitara Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is made in India and will be exported to over a hundred nations.”

India’s First Lithium-Ion Battery Production Also Begins

Alongside the EV rollout, PM Modi also inaugurated India’s first lithium-ion battery and cell production with electrode-level localisation. These batteries, manufactured at the Toshiba Denso Suzuki plant in Gujarat, will be used in hybrid and electric vehicles, further boosting India’s self-reliant EV ecosystem.

The event was also attended by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Japanese Ambassador Keiichi Ono, and Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki.

Maruti Suzuki Joins the EV Race Late but Strong

While Tata Motors and Mahindra have already established themselves in India’s EV market, and global brands like MG and Hyundai are expanding their presence, Maruti Suzuki is now officially entering the electric race.

The company has set an ambitious production target of 67,000 units for FY2026, with a major share earmarked for exports to Japan and Europe. The e Vitara is just the beginning — Maruti Suzuki has confirmed four new EV launches by 2030.
